High–Efficiency Boilers

While installing a high–efficiency boiler will lower your energy costs, it will not be as cost–effective in the long run if your home is not properly sealed and insulated. When our technicians evaluate your current heating system, we can also make recommendations for the best upgrade and how to make sure your home is ready for a new boiler. You will want to install a boiler with a high AFUE rating, which determines how much fuel the boiler actually turns into heat. Anything above 80% is a good rating, or you can also look for the Energy Star label.

The AFUE number doesn't account for heat loss from air ducts or chimneys, but if it is an electric boiler it will have a higher percentage because you won’t need to vent combustion fumes. Sealed–combustion gas or oil boilers are also more efficient because they vent directly to the outside of the home instead of pulling the heated air into the unit for combustion, which wastes heat. Older units that are not sealed also create the danger of toxic gases entering the living areas. You should also make sure that your chimney has a proper flue liner if you are upgrading your boiler, since the combustion gases can be corrosive and cause chimney fires or carbon monoxide intrusion.

If your boiler system is over 20 years old, you could be paying a lot more in energy costs, especially if your home still has the original insulation.
