WHY MANY HOMEOWNERS PREFER BOILERS TO OTHER HEATING SYSTEMS
October 27, 2014
Boilers have been around for a long time, making them the first whole-home heating systems. Today’s boilers are as updated as other heating systems, providing energy efficient heat and reliability. There are multiple reasons why the installation of a boiler in Tenafly is a good idea, but as with any whole-home system, it is highly recommended that you hire professionals. BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc., technicians are experts of boiler systems, so if you need a new system, or repair to an existing one, call us today.
How a Boiler Heats
Boilers are part of a hydronic heating system, which means they use water to provide heat. The heat can come from hot water or steam created from boiling water. The most common fuels used are oil and natural gas, although propane and solid fuels can also be used. Air and the fuel mix together in the combustion box, where a controlled flame erupts. This flame warms the heat exchanger, which then heats the water. With a steam boiler, the steam is collected in a dome, which is released when it reaches a certain capacity; hot water is released at a certain temperature. Both steam and hot water are circulated through the pipes; hot water systems need circulating pumps to push the water through (pressure pushes the steam through). Heat can be released via:
- Baseboard heating
- Radiant floor heating
- Radiant wall or ceiling heating
Benefits of a Boiler System
Here are some benefits a boiler system can offer you:
- No circulating dust – boilers are closed systems, and the heat radiates, so there is no blowing dust as there can be with a forced air system.
- Easy zoning – the piping system of a boiler can be divided easily into zones.
- Quiet operation – boiler systems heat quietly; the only sound you’ll hear is when the water is being heated.
- Even heating – the heat from a hydronic system radiates rather than blows, which can feel very comfortable to homeowners.
Boilers are dependable, energy efficient and provide comfortable heating.

A water heater is essential for a range of tasks from laundry to showering to washing your hands. When you need a new water heater, you want a system that will last for years to come and won’t quit during the most important daily activities. A dependable type of water heater that is growing in popularity available today is the tankless water heater, one that does not store water in a tank for later use, like typical units. But are tankless water heaters right for every home? We’ll take a look at both tank and tankless units so that you can decide for yourself which is the best option for your particular needs.
Storage Tank Water Heaters
Storage tank water heaters are the most common type used in homes today. These have large tanks which keep water heated at all times so that you have access to it at any point in the day. A long tube leads to the bottom of the unit, where there is either a gas burner underneath or an electric heating element inside of the tank. Thanks to the heat rising principle, hot water rises over any cold water in the tank and is sucked up through a small pipe at the top. While these units are generally less costly than tankless units, they may do a poor job of heating large volumes of water, which is why many people decide to go tankless.
Tankless Water Heaters
Instead of storing water throughout the day, tankless water heaters contain a computer that directs the unit to turn on whenever a hot water tap is activated in the home. A tankless water heater runs on electricity or gas to activate a high powered heat exchanger, which heats water as soon as it passes by.
Because they don’t use energy throughout the day, tankless units will save some energy over storage tank water heaters—particularly if your previous storage tank unit was electric, as electricity costs more to consume. Tankless models also tend to have longer lifespans, as they are less likely to be victims of rust and corrosion too early on since they do not continuously store water. In some homes, you may need multiple units to ensure top performance.

The bathroom plumbing and fixtures are a necessity in your home, but it’s also important that you like the look and feel of these fixtures. And since design is just as important as functionality in your bathroom, it’s important to choose professional plumbers when you decide on a bathroom remodel. Plumbing and remodeling specialists can not only install your new fixtures for you; they can also make sure the plumbing is up-to-date or changed if needed for maximum efficiency and comfort.
The plumbing and remodeling experts at BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc. would like to help you select the new fixtures for your bathroom remodel in Dumont with this helpful guide.
The most important consideration to most homeowners when choosing new fixtures is design, as a new vision for the bathroom is usually what leads homeowners to call for remodeling services. While you may already have an idea of where you’d like new fixtures to be, a professional can help you decide whether this is practical or whether your current plumbing layout can accommodate your plan.
You may choose to place new faucets and fixtures in the same location as before. However, sometimes you want different options, such as a bathroom sink that is positioned higher up for more cabinet space below, or a new standing shower in place of an unused bathtub. Plumbers can determine what changes need to be made with the plumbing system to make these changes, and whether pipes need to be removed, repositioned, or replaced.
Another important consideration is efficiency. Today, low flow fixtures are preferable alternatives to older plumbing fixtures, as they save a lot of water without giving up any comfort. A low-flush toilet uses about half as much water per flush as older models, and low-flow faucets are fairly inexpensive and provide adequate pressure at low cost to you. Redesigned plumbing can also improve efficiency, as older pipes may be prone to leaks or clogging.
At BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc., we’d like to help you select the most eloquent and practical design for your bathroom remodel in Dumont.

Radiant heating is gaining popularity as a more efficient alternative to traditional forced air heating systems. How do radiant heating systems actually accomplish this efficiency, though? Let’s take a look at how radiant floor heating works, and why you should consider upgrading.
PARTS OF A RADIANT FLOOR HEATING SYSTEM
The first step to installing a radiant floor heating system is to set small tubes between the floor and the subfloor in every room you want heated. These tubes are then connected to the boiler, which is usually in a garage or basement. The boiler heats water, then runs this hot water through the tubes set in the floor of each room. Heat radiates from these pipes, up through the floor and into the room. The heat is absorbed in turn by anything that is touching the floor, like couches and chairs. When someone walks across the floor or sits on the furniture, the heat is transferred to them. The air temperature itself is not affected all that much, but you still feel warm because you are interacting with the thermal energy in the room directly.
WHY RADIANT FLOOR HEATING IS SO EFFICIENT
This method of delivery is what makes radiant heating so efficient. Forced air systems typically lose a sizeable amount of thermal energy to duct leaks between the furnace and the vent. Radiant floor heating utilizes special watertight tubes to transport the hot water. As such, leaks are far less of a concern. This allows a much more effective delivery of heat throughout the house.
Radiant heating also has the advantage of heating a space much more evenly. Air flows can be affected by many factors, including drafts and the shape of a room. Radiant heating relies more on transferring thermal energy directly, thereby avoiding a lot of the external factors that could lessen the efficiency of a forced air system.
