OPERATING PRINCIPLES OF A SUMP PUMP

June 20, 2014

If you live in an area with a high water table or one that experiences heavy rains, a sump pump serves an essential function: removing excess moisture from your basement or crawlspaces. A sump pump stops expensive water damage problems, protects your belongings, reduces humidity, and prevents the development of dangerous molds and mildews.

Sump pumps require professional installation to make sure that they work correctly at removing water from your home and placing it in the wastewater system. A poorly installed sump pump in Teaneck, NJ is as bad as no sump pump at all, so always look to experienced plumbing professionals when you need installation.

If you need a sump pump installed or serviced contact our team at BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc., where excellent customer service is our #1 priority.

The basics of sump pump operation

Sump pumps come in two standard models: pedestal and submersible. Both work from similar principles, however, and both require a sump, an excavated spot with a gravel base inside your basement that draws and collects water. Whether the sump sits on a pedestal above the sump and draws water through a line (pedestal pump) or it sits down within the sump and directly draws the water into its pump (submersible pump), it needs to have a deep enough sump to allow it a sufficient amount of water to drain.

A sump pump activates when the water in the sump rises high enough to activate a float or pressure sensor. Water then flows through a pipe past a check valve (to prevent the water from running back out) from the action of a centrifugal pump. An impeller spins to move the water toward the side of the pipe, and this causes an area of low-pressure to form in the center of the pipe. The water in the sump, which is at a higher pressure than the area in the pipe, now rushes in to fill the empty space, where the force of the spinning impeller pushes it out through the pipe and into the wastewater system of the home.

Sump pumps use electricity to run, so you don’t need to worry about using an extra energy source. You do need to worry about keeping the power system from the water, and this is another reason to always have professionals handle sump pump installation.

When you call BZ Dependable Plumbing & Heating, Inc. regarding a sump pump in Teaneck, NJ, our plumbers will find out whether a submersible or pedestal pump is the right match for your home, determine how powerful it needs to be, and then take care of creating the sump in the right spot and installing the pump so it works efficiently. We will also handle maintenance and any repairs you may need to keep your sump pump operating for many years.

FORT LEE, NJ PLUMBING: SPRING SUMP PUMP TIPS

April 8, 2013

While you may have already begun your spring cleaning around the house, you may not have thought about your sump pump. Because it’s often used as a kind of “insurance appliance” against occasional flooding or seasonal increases in rainfall, there are extended periods when it is not in use. As with any mechanical system, it’s important that your sump pump receive routine maintenance. It needs professional attention at least once a year so that you know it’s there when you need it most. In this post, we’d like to run you through some of our spring sump pump tips. For Fort Lee, NJ plumbing servicescall BZ Dependable today!

Here are some things necessary for sump pump maintenance:

  • Check power: Your sump pump relies on a steady stream of electric current, although it may also be equipped with a battery backup. Make sure that the pump has not become disconnected from its GFCI outlet that the cord is in good shape. If there’s a battery, replace it every once in a while so that you’re prepared in the event that your power goes out during a flood.
  • Test: If your sump pump is out of shape, then put it to work. Dumping some water into the sump pit is a great way to ensure that your unit still works properly. A more comprehensive test should be carried out by a professional, who will perform a thorough inspection and cleaning of all its various components.
  • Upright: Making sure that your sump pump stands upright, ready for action, is an essential part of your sump pump’s operation. If it has fallen, the float arm will not adequately sense the encroaching water levels.
  • Check the outlet pipes: As you probably know, your sump pump has to pump water outside your home and not just into a drain or sewer. The integrity of your outlet pipe is critical to the sump pump’s performance. By regularly checking and cleaning the outlet system, you can ensure excellent and reliable water removal.

Don’t wait until the next basement flooding to see if your sump pump works. Schedule sump pump maintenance today. For Fort Lee, NJ plumbing services, call the experts at BZ Dependable today!

BERGENFIELD PLUMBING QUESTION: WHY IS SUMP PUMP MAINTENANCE IMPORTANT?

August 27, 2012

Sump pumps perform an essential function for those in Bergenfield who have water table issues, or water drainage issues around their building.  When you need that sump pump to work on rainy days, the last thing you want is to find out it is broken.  The best way to prevent this scenario from occurring is in having sump pump maintenance performed regularly by a highly-trained Bergenfield plumbing professional such as those at BZ Dependable.

When a sump pump works as it should, it keeps your basement nice and dry.  When a sump pump breaks down, it can not only cause water damage, but creates an environment where various bacteria and mold thrive, as well as possibly even affecting the stability of the foundation of a building.

During sump pump maintenance, all outlets and electrical wiring will be checked. We will also ensure that the backup battery is in proper working order, and that grates and inlets are free of debris and clogs. The vent hole in the discharge pipe will be cleared of debris, and outlet pipes will be inspected.

Because a sump pump doesn’t run all the time, it is important to keep track of how well it is working before you really need it, otherwise it will be too late once the water starts flowing.

Keeping your sump pump maintained and in working order will ease your mind, and the Bergenfield plumbers at BZ Dependable can easily assist you through professional sump pump maintenance which can be performed on an annual basis.  Contact BZ Dependable today!
